West London Alliance Church

Sermon Playlist for April 5, 2020

Hey everybody, Dave here, and here are my song choices for the worship set for this Sunday. As some of you know, our high-school missions team arrived back in Canada from Peru last weekend after an unforeseen extended stay. During our time in Peru, we were able to spend most evenings in a time of musical worship and broadcasted that time of worship back to Canada where we joined by a number of people. After considering the passage that Pastor Jude will be preaching on, the current state of our nation and society, and remembering the songs that we sang in Peru (still fresh in my mind), here are my picks for the songs for Sunday AM.

Pre-sermon Set

Man of Sorrows – Shane & Shane

“Silent as he stood accused” is a lyric that stands out from this song. Isaiah 53:7 says “He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth;” Jesus was sinless, and though “he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth” he chose to endure the cross of us – choosing the path of “oppression and judgment he was taken away;” and led to the cross to shed his blood for our sins. Now are debt is paid, and is paid in full!

Power of the Cross

There was power over sin and death at Calvary, and this song encapsulates the pain and the victory that was present at that moment. Christ, “bearing the awesome weight of sin,” “stricken for the transgression of my people.” “Every bitter thought, every evil deed, crowning Your bloodstained brow” – Christ died for our sins, soon we will see the day when “Finished!” is the victory cry!

Yes and Amen

This song may be new to some of our congregants, but it speaks to the hope that we have in promises of God. “The Suffering Servant” was foreshadowed in Isaiah 53, and his willingness to endure the cross now results in our privilege of worshipping him amidst the full revelation of those promises that we find in His Word. We can rest in those promises even amidst the trying circumstances we may encounter. He will never leave us nor forsake – He is faithful!

Post Sermon Songs

O Church Arise

This particular song has significant meaning for the Mission Peru 2020 team. We sang this almost daily, singing of taking up our “shield of faith & belt of truth, we’ll stand against the devils lies.” We are being bombarded by Satan’s lies in this present day, but this song points to the hope we find in Jesus Christ while calling the church rise up in this unsettling and uncertain time.

What A Beautiful Name / Agnus Dei
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diQPE7lYNsQ
The truth of the lyrics of the first song sets up the entry into the second (at 4:23) resulting in what I think it will sound like in heaven – constant, prolonged worship of the Lamb who is Worthy. “They made his grave with the wicked” and he was “cut off out of the land of the living,” but only for a short while. Now he is seated at the right hand of the Father, where one day we will worship him forever!
