I love gardens and especially the new growth that spring brings (I can only imagine what the garden of Eden was like!). This is definitely my favourite season.
When the concept of a Community Garden at WLA came up two years ago, I was excited about planning it but not sure about my ability to oversee it since I had no experience. It was a little stressful, but God was gracious and helped us each step of the way. I had an experienced co-coordinator come on board (thank you Valerie Naylor!) and a great garden team from the church to work with. It was such a rewarding venture! Last year, it was amazing to see our space become more and more beautiful as each gardener tended their own plot their own way, creating a diverse and amazing collage of God’s creation.
One of the things I was surprised by was how much I enjoyed watching other people gardening and working alongside them, chatting about the ins and outs of growing vegetables, and having conversations with those in our community who are not attending church but searching for community. This is the “harvest” I was truly interested in …
Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” (Matthew 9:37-38)
We are now looking forward to our second season for the WLA Community Garden and are off to a great start. There are many returning gardeners and some new ones joining us this year … with only 4 of our 28 plots left to lease out. If you know of anyone who might want to lease a plot, please pass along this link www.wlachurch.org/garden
We are also looking for members to join our Garden Team (no experience necessary!). If you are interested in serving this way at WLA and would like more information, please contact me. This year will look a little different with the need for social distancing, but we hope to still be able to have conversations with our gardeners (from a safe distance) while tending the church plots for the Food Bank vegetables.
If you like to be outdoors in a garden setting and you enjoy talking to people … Come grow with us!
